I personally deem that cheerleading is an essential activity on campus. Frankly speaking, I am not sure that you mean cheerleading should be abolished in your school or in all the universities. (I suggest you to make an explanation in your comments later.) But as far as I am concerned, I think that almost every school has no strong reasons to oppose against cheerleading. As a matter of fact, this topic can be extended to all the sports. Despite a country, a local government or a school, I do not consider one of them will discourage its members from taking exercise. I strongly recommend that appropriate exercise is necessary, especially in the modern society.
First of all, cheerleading can make students exercise. In other words, joining in cheer squad increases the opportunity for students to take sports. Moderate exercise makes a healthy and attractive figure. Cheerleading is one of sports. As a result, cheerleaders have the tendency to live a healthy life than people who lack of sports. However, I have to emphasize the word “moderate.” Moderate exercise means not excessive. For example, some protester of cheerleading may say that cheerleading will occupy the precious time on academy for students. Nevertheless, the reason is only make sense when the practice of cheerleading is to an extreme. For instance, I remember that in CCU, on the eve of cheerleading contest, some departments’ practices last over three hours or to over twelve o’clock. It ends up a torture indeed. Some exercise injuries may occur when practicing for a lengthy time. Hence, I repeat once more. Cheerleading is good for health unless it is excessive.
Second, cheerleading makes unity. In my school, cheer team is the first activity I take part in. Also, it is the first time to gather almost every freshman in our class. That is to say, cheerleading is a good chance to meet new peers and cultivate unity. Since during the practice, some acrobatics need trust and familiarity, the unspoken consensus will be made simultaneously. Furthermore, while practicing cheerleading, those who are diligent will get the social recognition form peers and upperclassmen. Responding to my first point, it may have the fine influence on psychological health.
All in all, cheerleading should not be forbidden in universities.
Dear all, I could understand that sometimes we are busy. And, I hear that key pals in FJCU have to practice cheerleading. Also, I guess that is why we have less discussion these weeks. Here, I just add a few opinions as follows. Hope you can enjoy your cheerleading. Cheer up, ladies! Let’s exert ourselves on our group project and your cheerleading. After rereading my comments, I think that I could add some supporting ideas to cheerleading. Should someone oppose cheer squad for reasons of sports injuries, he/she may be criticized for exaggeration. Because cheerleading is a kind of sports, sports injuries are inevitable as far as long-term practice. But in such ratiocination, some may consider that the definition of “long term” is questionable. In addition, in college, students can only take a precaution against sports injuries to certain degree. This degree is determined by how much resources are put into cheerleaders’ training. When it comes to precaution, responsibility may be a question. In other words, if students advocate cheerleading should not be abrogated, who can decrease accidents, school, department, or upperclassmen/women? In the light of the forgoing questions, I deem that cheerleading must have a coach or experienced teacher to ensure every team member’s safety. Otherwise, happy memories in cheer squad may become a trauma in the end. Cheer up, Tina Lee
Thanks Tina’s advice. : ) I wan to focus on whether cheerleading should be abolished or not in all the universities. As you know, there was a cheerleading contest in FJU, and the cheerleading contest is mainly for freshman. In fact, the cheerleading contest in FJU is a little different from other universities because in FJU, only students in foreign language departments can participate in the contest. Actually, I didn’t join cheerleading when I was a freshman. However, many friends of mine joined cheerleading at that time, and when they were practicing, I would go to spot to see their practice. I felt many acrobatics were dangerous because some people should do performance on a two to three floors high place. Sometimes, someone would fell from high place and get hurt, and couldn’t join cheerleading any more from then on. Also, students should spend much time practicing cheerleading and many of them didn’t have time to study and do homework. I agree that students spent time practicing in order to get champion, but if they practiced until eleven o’clock was a little too late. Their practicing would influence people who live nearby. To be honest, I definitely agree cheerleading is a symbol of spirit, and cheerleading really can make classmates have more understanding with each other and become more united. In fact, my roommates told me that she heard that cheerleading would be abolished next year, but I am not sure whether this news is true or not. In conclusion, I am not very sure whether cheerleading should be abolished or not, because cheerleading had both its advantages and disadvantages. It’s really hard to make a decision.
Have you ever seen the movie Bring it up? It is a movie about cheerleading. When I was in high school, I love this movie very much. After I entered to university, there was a cheerleading competition. I was excited at first, but I got pressure afterward. I started feeling tired of it. I am not crazy about it anymore because of the pressure that the competition gave me and we spent too much time on practicing which makes me do not have time to do other things that I want to do. After being a cheerleader in person, I realized that it was not as fun as I thought. Although I love to dance, the moves in cheerleading are different from real dancing. I dance because I want to dance not because I need to. Therefore, I do not like to dance for some purpose. In addition, cheerleaders have to do some exaggerated facial expression during the whole performance. I think it is kind of silly, but it helps to win the game. Anyway, I do not like cheerleading in some ways, but I think it is necessary. After all, when there is a game, it still needs cheerleaders to cheer for the players.
I love cheerleading after I joined the FJU cheerleading competition for the foreign language college (like Joy had mentioned before) when I was freshman. Of course the whole process of practicing was exhausting, we had the competition on the end of March, and we started practice from February. We practiced about 5 days a week. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we practiced after school, from 6 to 9. But on Saturday and Sunday, we practiced for the whole day, from morning to 5 p.m. And when it comes to the week before the competition, we even practiced until 10 p.m. Thus I know why some professor or students want to abolish the cheerleading competition; it was really a huge event that makes the students spend the majority of time to practice. And some of them would start to skip class or turn in late assignment; I believe that is also another reason for the people who want to abolish the competition. Another reason is that actually cheerleading is dangerous because of some difficult skills. For example, flyers need to be threw up to the sky and caught by others when they fall down. But sometimes they might missed the time and let the flyers get hurt. During our practicing, lots of people would get hurt but still keep practicing because we think this is a teem work and we can not be a burden of the team. Although I know it sounds bad if we do not take a rest after the injury, we learn a sense of responsibility and insistence. This is also why I do not agree to abolish the competition. I do not think an education which only focuses on academic performance would be a good one; instead, I agree students have this kind of extra curriculum. We could learn a lot from the cheerleading competition; learn the importance of team work and the honor.
By the way, dear guys, here is the link of the competition which I participated in, but it's too hard for me to tell you which one was me, if you are interesting, please take a look!:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=TW&hl=zh-TW&v=QnC2o06QQac&feature=PlayList&p=14D4D0882E558343&index=0
To Maggie, I agree that we can learn the importance of teamwork and honor from cheerleading. Besides cheerleading, there are a lot of sports which is concerning teamwork and honor, such as volleyball and basketball. For me, cheerleading is an exercise composed of gymnastics, dancing and teamwork. After experiencing the cheerleading contest last semester, I now know the meaning of cheerleading and I am sure that I do not have any interest in cheerleading. What’s worst, I am the one who is chosen to be the cheerleading instructor of the freshman next year. I guess it is because that I love to dance and my classmates think that I can do a good job. Although I am a little unhappy about this, I still need to be positive and accept it readily. Let us cheer up. :D (big but unnatural smile) hehe…
