  1. Joy, I guess that you think of this topic while seeing a news recently, right? A thirty-two-year-old lady died a sudden death due to anorexia. She is 1.6 meters tall but only 31 kilograms when she passed away. I think that this weight-losing phenomenon comes from the influences of mass media. Despite on TV programs, advertisements, or catwalks, stars and models show the audience a concept that slim body is the best. As a result, lots of people regard the perfect figure as a dream and try hard to lose weight as much as possible. Moreover, some even use extreme way to do so. Like the news above, some people (mostly ladies and teenagers) lose their weight and lives simultaneously.

For me, I deem this weight-losing phenomenon nonsense. Actually, I am a underweight person since childhood. I never lose weight and sometimes envy those who are moderate weight. My digestive system is bad so I cannot gain weight anyway. My mother even took me to see doctors or eat herbal medicine but still in vain. After trying very hard, I think that maintain my own figure is fine. After all, being myself (and yourselves) is(are) the best.

  2. I think I am fat in partial of my body, especially my belly. (Joy, you can check whether I’m lying or not!HAHA!) I used to have the thought that maybe I would stay in an underweight figure when I grow up, since in my childhood life, I am skinny. However, now, I find out I was totally wrong. I start to get weight when I was in senior high, and now, in the third year of my college life, I have gained 2-3 more weight since I entered the college. I know it is because I do not do exercise now and I can’t stop eating when I am at home. That’s horrible. When I was in senior high, I used to play volleyball a lot, so even though I like to eat foods which have high calorie like fried chicken, I did not put a lot of weight in senior high. But now, I do not have time and chance to do exercise, my weight keeps increasing. (OMG)
But now, I do not have the courage to try to lose my weight, because now I depend on eating to release my stress. I know that I would not be tough enough to refuse the delicacy, thus it is also hard for me to lose weight.
Some girls really care about their figures, and all they want is a perfect figure. I think it needs a lot of effort and persistence to keep in a perfect figure like the models or superstars do, but I do not think it is really necessary. We have our own beauty and if we chose being beauty but lose our health in the meantime, it’s not a good deal.

  3. Yes, Maggie, you are right. We should love our appearances as long as we are healthy. But I think maybe you should quit the habit of eating junk food. Take me for example. I seldom eat fast food and drink beverages in tea shops. Maybe, that is why I am slim. In addition, I guess that you like to eat night snacks, right? Eating night snacks are one of the important factors leading to obesity. Give you a suggestion. You can eat chewing gum rather than snacks if you cannot resist the temptation of delicacies. Besides, doing exercise can be efficient. That is, we can keep a perfect figure even if we spend not so much time on exercising. Like my roommate, she does exercise after sleep everyday. Also, after dinner, she will take a walk. Contrary to her, I am really lack of exercising. Maybe, I will be overweight if I keep this unhealthy life style.

    Best regards,

  4. Dear Tina, haha! You’re right! I love to eat night snacks, almost everyday. I know it’s a bad habit, but I have this habit for about 6 years I guess. I know it’s unhealthy and also a big reason of obesity (because I’m doing a research paper on dietary habit, and I found out that I really have a bad habit on diet, too bad!) And thanks for your advice; I think exercise is really important! When I was in senior high school, I played volleyball almost everyday, and at that time, I feel I have more energy studying for the exam, however for now, I stop playing volleyball when I enter the college, and I feel my energy and health are going down. Now I need to spend a lot of time sitting before the computer to do my reports, and stay up late to 2 to 3 o’clock in the morning. Alas, thus, when I have some extra leisure time, I would choose to go to sleep instead of doing exercise. Oh my god! It’s so bad and unhealthy!

  5. Tina, I really saw the news on TV, and that news really surprised me a lot, and the picture on TV is horrible because she was too skinny. Actually, I thought I was slim when I was in senior high, but when I entered college, I thought I was totally wrong. Compared with other girls in FJU, I am fat. Furthermore, those thin girls seem to be not satisfied with their body shape even though they are so thin. Therefore, this weight-losing phenomenon really makes me upset because I am fatter than them. Actually, I think mass media really has great impact on girls’ opinions to beauty. The models on TV and in magazine, etc. are thin seems to convey an idea that “thin equal to beauty”, and many girls are persuaded that they are not thin enough, and they should keep losing weight to have a pretty thin body shape as those models. In fact, I don’t think thin is equal to beauty and I believe being confident and having a normal body shape is more important than anything. Most of girls lose weight by having a diet, according to research, having a diet will destroy the circulation of organs. Is it worth that one has a thin and beautiful body shape but she loses her health at the same time? To be honest, I don’t deny that fat really has bad impact on a person’s health, but these girls who keep losing weight are not fat at all. Therefore, I think maybe the government should do something to educate citizens the correct idea of beauty and the importance of health.

  6. I love this topic because I can express my opinion about weight-losing phenomenon heartily. Many girls around me always said that they think they are too fat. When I hear a girl whose legs are as thin as a bird says this kind of thing to me, I always want to give her a big slap on the face. Well, I will not really give her a slap on the face. It is just an exaggeration of my feeling. Why girls keep saying that they are fat? Do their boyfriends say that? Or they just want to be as pretty as the models on television. Speaking of models on television, I have to acknowledge that the major cause of weight-losing phenomenon is the skinny models on television. Because the media keep spreading the concept of slender equals beautiful to the public, many girls who eager to become beautiful begin to bear the thought that being slim is being beautiful. Girls may think that if they are skinny, they can wear many clothes and can be as pretty as models. However, this concept is totally wrong. Being healthy is much more important than being skinny. I think that being beautiful have nothing to do with being skinny but having a perfect shape of body. If a woman is as thin as a bamboo pole, can you say she is beautiful? Therefore, girls should stop thinking that it is as much better as they lose more weights. They should exercise regularly and keep their bodies in good shape. People who have good body shape look good in all kinds of clothes.

  7. Dear charming ladies,
I am delighted that we are all smart girls to keep healthy instead of keeping skinny.

To Joy, I think you look cute and are of moderate figure based on your photo and my opinion. Furthermore, I do not consider that we have to compare with others because everyone has a perfect figure for oneself. According to my PE teacher, she said that human bodies have a tendency to keep in suitable size for living. If a person wants to lose weight, he/she has to make great efforts and patience. As I mentioned above, health is more precious than slim body. Also, I come out in favor of your ideas that government should take actions to stop the abnormal weight-losing phenomenon. As far as I am concerned, governments must control the mass media first.

To May, I have great sympathy with your description of skinny girls. As you mentioned, “Girls may think that if they are skinny, they can wear many clothes and can be as pretty as models. However, this concept is totally wrong.” Yes, totally wrong! Actually, finding a suitable size of clothes is difficult for thin people like me. Besides, when I see your description “bamboo pole,” I feel a little funny and sad because my mom said that I like a bamboo pole or a refugee before. Moreover, being slander brings me lots of discomfort. It is a nightmare rather than a dream for me.

    Kind regards,
    Tina Lee

  8. To Tina, I like what you say above. Being you is the best. Do not compare with others. We as women should have confident to ourselves. Sorry for mentioning the bamboo pole. I did not know that it will make you feel sad. Just like you said before, you should be confident to yourself. Although you are very skin, you still can have your own style. Skin people have their way to be beautiful. You are skin in a healthy way, so it is okay. Don’t worry. Be happy. : )
To dear all, I am glad that we all have right cognition on weight losing. I believe that if we keep a good living habit and exercise regularly, we will be pretty and healthy. Let us work hard for this goal together!
