  1. Wow, May. It’s really a hot topic, isn’t it? Since you have participated in the art exhibition in CCU, you think of the definition of art and design for the topic this week. Back to the main point, I personally think that design can be a subgenre of art. But if you ladies consider that design is an individual concept, I feel it OK.

Based on my opinions, art has no purpose. It is a demonstration of the artists’ feelings. That is, when an artist is inspired by his/her interior feelings or exterior world, an artwork is made. The artworks are the medium of artists’ thoughts. While admiring artworks, the artists’ passion will influence the audience. Art is a subjective concept. In other words, artists have their own ideas about their pieces. On the other hand, the viewers will have various vibrations toward the same artwork. Contrary to art, most designs are made to solve daily problems in people’s life. Majority of the designs are commercial products. Occasionally, designers will make a draft before designing. That is to say, designs are usually planned. A design is a combination of beauty and practicability. A good design should be useful for almost everyone. As a result, designers have to be objective. They should put themselves in users’ shoes.

  2. As far as I am concerned, the difference between art and design can be viewed from three domains: purposes, the value, and limitations. I have mentioned that the purposes of art and design are different last time. This time, I would like to share additional opinions toward their value and limitations.

The value of artworks is worthless since artworks are made for expressing artists’ personal feelings rather than for sales. Generally speaking, the price of art pieces is higher than designs. Artworks are only and one in general. As a result, many people are willing to spend money to collect art pieces. On the contrary, designs are often commercial products so their prices will be affordable for common people. But some designs are limited editions. The prices of them tend to be high.

Art has no limitation while design has worldly concerns usually. An artist can create anything he/she likes regardless of others’ opinions. However, most of the designers have to give way to their employers. In addition, designers must do their cases with time limit. From my point of view, artists are happier than designers.

  3. W9 Art & Design
Wow! This week’s topic is hard for me. I have very few knowledge toward art and design; although I admired artists and designers very much, I think this field is very unfamiliar for me. Thus here I only share what I think about this two terms, don’t laugh at me.
Art and design sound similar for me; in my opinion, “art” is more abstract than “design”. When I see “design”, it makes me think of house designer, fashion designer, advertisement designer, product designer…etc. Somehow they are all using their creativity to design stuff that is needed by human. Oh…but, do we have art designer? I’m so confused (= =”). Art in my mind is more difficult to understand than design.
Like when I have a course called Western Civilization in my sophomore year, we have to remember and learn how to appreciate lots of classic artworks, from ancient Greek paintings to modern urban art. And I remember we need to know which artists like to use which style, or which churches are Gothic styles. They are all very beautiful and significant, but it’s hard for me to understand the meaning of the artwork, especially modern art, which sometimes is really abstract for me to appreciate.
Maybe artist and designers have some similar characters, like both of them are using creativity to create things like house, clothes, or paintings. Whenever I saw those artworks, I really admire their talents in this field.
By the way, Tina said May is working on the art exhibition. May, you must have strong interest in art and design; perhaps you could tell us more about this topic. Look forward to your respond.

  4. In my opinion, it is difficult to tell the differences between art and design. There are still few connections between art and design. In general, I will say that art is a way to express one’s feeling and design is a method to solve problems. The range of art is extremely big. Here, the art I am talking about are paintings. Artists use many different kinds of material to paint. For artist, they paint for no reason. They create those works simply because of their willingness and love for art. The contents of their works can be anything, such as the person they love, the things that is special for them or their emotions. All I want to point out is that art is a thing for no reason. People make contact with art because they love it. However, in order to make a living, art may have some connections with business. It is another topic to discuss. I just skip it. Speaking of design, it is certainly a matter concerning business. Take clothes designer for example, they try their best to design clothes that people love and want to buy. Clothing design is a tremendous industry in the world. Back to the initial concept, why I think design is a method to solve problem? We can see that many things that we always use in our lives are all designed by designers. There are millions of chairs in the market. Taking wooden chairs in schools for example, at first, we all seat on flat wooden boards. However, seating on a flat broad for a long time is uneasy for student. Therefore, the chair producers make the flat broads into curved broads which can correspond to the shape of body. The new chairs with curved broads make students who seat on it all day long feel more comfortable. As a result, design is a tool to make our life more convenient. Nowadays, many companies not only design things that can make our lives more convenient but also work with artist to make the product more beautiful so there will be more customers who want to buy it. Due to this reason, I will say that the line between art and design is becoming blurred.

  5. Aloha, Maggie and May.
I agree with you two that art and design are closely related. Also, as Maggie has mentioned, modern art, especially surrealism, is fathomless for common people. Since I have explained the difference between art and design on first and second floor (I mean above,) I would like to share a film called “Un Chien andalou(安達魯之犬)” with you to support May’s opinion (art has no reason.) It is an interesting film produced by Luis Buñuel(布紐爾) and Salvador Dalí(達利.)

Warning: If you are afraid of horror movie, you can skip the film.

P.S. May, I went to see the exhibition in the library several weeks ago. I found that there are lots of artists in CCU.
    Sincerely,
    Tina Lee

  6. To Maggie, do not be afraid of art. I used to be afraid of art, but now I believe that art is everywhere in your life. Art can be simple or complicated. It depends on how you appreciate it. We will not laugh at you. : ) You can say what you want to say freely.
To Tina, I totally agree with your point. Thanks for sharing the film with us. I totally can not understand what this film is about. I do not like the style of this film. It is sort of terrifying for me.
