After I saw a video about how American college students learn, I was really impressed by their way of study. I do not study in a similar way. I always learn things from the books. The students in the video use many sources on the Internet to learn. They can get information from everywhere around the world and share their opinion with someone who study the same topic through the Internet. I think that is the reason why they are called Networked Students. They are all connected with each other by the Internet.
I think it is a good change, because learning from the books can limit one’s horizon. Books are not always right. Theories can be overthrown. Using the Internet to study can update the information about things that we are learning and can have some new discoveries. I have a computer which is connected to the Internet, so why I do not study in this way but keep chatting online and doing other boring things. I should try to learn in this way right away.
Western education is much different from eastern education. Similarly, the ways we learn is much different from westerners. We always sit in the classroom, listen to the teacher, read our textbook, write notes in notebook and be ready for another tests. As a consequence, the term “Networked Students” is very unusual to us. It’s hard for us to think learning through Internet. Take me for example, I always get information mainly form books before I go to college. However, now I am a college student, the way I learn is not only through books. Many times we have to form into groups and search information online. Moreover, we have to exchange our opinions through MSN or e-mail. The way we learn is getting more and more similar to the college students’ in American after we go to college.
回覆刪除Similarly, learning through Internet seems normal to the American college students. To understand one topic, they just have to search on the Internet and read the information on line, and then share their opinions with each other. This way of learning has advantages and disadvantages. Through Internet, they can find a variety of information from all over the world. They do not have to go abroad but they can know many kinds of information online. What’s more, the information online would be updated, so they can always link to the newest information.
However, there are also cons about the way of learning. Since there is so much information online, they have to choose more reliable and professional information so that they can trust the information they found. They have to think that whether the sources are reliable and trustable or not. They have to differentiate from right and wrong, true and false. That means that they have to have basic understand of how to find and judge right information.
Internet is really convenient, but how to use if properly to find trustable information is also hard. As a consequence, there are pros and cons in this way of learning.
I agree with what you said. It is true that there is wrong information on the Internet. Therefore, we have to double check the information on the Internet before we use it. We also need to develop the ability to judge the right and wrong.
回覆刪除After thinking their learning strategy for a long time, I think all the students should have strong motivation to learn. Otherwise, how could they find this way of learning? They must be very active and have strong motivation to learn, so they will try their best to learn as many things as they can. The point I want to say is that if we have strong motivation to learn, we can also find the similar learning strategy to help us.
Motivation is really an important role in learning. I think this is why in college, we can choose our major on our own so that we can choose something we are interesting in.
